Gazing at the Tasman Sea

Watching the light change yesterday during the afternoon from The Illawarra Brewery near Wollongong City Beach, I experienced a profound sense of belonging, of heimat – I can’t really put it into words. Perhaps it is the place, on the site of a pioneer cemetery. Perhaps it is knowing my father’s family were around here more than a hundred years ago now. Perhaps it is the family story of descent from the Dharawal via my father’s mother, a blood link that goes back millennia.  Who knows? But what I felt was analogous to being in a great cathedral…

Nor was it just the Porter.

The book I will talk about later.
