Two of Sirdan’s and my Sunday lunch spots have been awarded “bests” by The Sydney Morning Herald.
BEST PUB BY REGION (country) Mount Kembla Village Hotel
Head chef Dane Tobias is a south coast local who trained with celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver and Rick Stein in Britain. He sources ingredients locally and, where possible, makes everything from scratch. And you can’t argue with rosemary-crumbed chicken schnitzel or creamy cinnamon and vanilla creme brulee with rhubarb compote. Nice building, too, with a cracking and unpretentious bar.
BEST USE OF LOCAL PRODUCE Mount Kembla Village Hotel
Chef Dane Tobias is passionate about local and seasonal produce and deserves kudos for turning the lovely hotel into a Southern Highlands food haven.
BEST VALUE FOR MONEY The Shakespeare, Surry Hills
The Shakes is one of the best local pubs we’ve come across in recent years. The food isn’t going to win any fine-dining awards but it’s eminently eatable and, with nothing more than $10, fantastic value for money. Don’t believe us? Check the customers crowding in there almost every night of the week.
Also this week it appears some US talk show host is visiting Australia. We’ve had presidents, popes, princes —
… but talk show hosts put them all in the shade.
Personally I couldn’t care less.
