Nothing much to add to last year’s posts on Indian students and Australia

Recent tragedies have inflamed the debate about Australian racism. I am not in a position to assert one way or the other that these are racist incidents, but of course they may be. At the same time doubts expressed by the police and others on that point may well not be mere “whitewashing”. Nonetheless, there clearly are racists in Australia; my contention last year was, and still is, that Australians are no more or less racist than anyone else.

Like Jim Belshaw I deplore the extremes of the framing of these events by some in the media and their readers, the passages Jim cites from blog comments in the Hindustan Times and the Sydney Morning Herald being good bad examples.

Here is what I had to say last year.
